Jewellery has been a fashion icon through the ages. As early as prehistoric times, adornments were seen as symbols of status, wealth and power. It was not until the bronze-age that permanent body appurtenances were deemed to justify the term jewellery. Ancient civilisations soon got to work moulding and shaping all kinds of beautiful items. Most noteworthy are artefacts from the Incas, Aztecs of Latin-America and the Greeks and Romans of Europe. However, ancient Britain lays claim to many priceless items that have been unearthed on ancient sites.

Many people do their serious buying of jewellery items in tax-free countries and save large amounts of money. One of the favourites at the moment is Dubai where you can save an enormous amount on a highly priced gemstone. Another option is to take a look on the internet where you will find discounted rings, necklaces and broaches. You can literally let your fingers do the walking but not with the old yellow pages. You get fully illustrated pictures and detailed information on everything. It sometimes pays to visit the high street to see products in their real state and then check online and compare prices which should normally be lower.

As we all know, the price of gold has shot through the roof and is again seen as one of the better ways to invest money. This of course has had a major impact on the price of necklaces and rings etc in the average retail outlet. If you are buying gold jewellery abroad, you need to be particularly careful that you are buying the genuine article as the mandatory hallmark that is found on pieces sold in the Uk is not standard practice in many countries in Asia. I know, personally, people who have been ripped off when someone has foisted a ring which was not what it was claimed to be.

When looking at buying jewellery, I like to search for unusual items that are distinct from other every day designs. You don’t have to spend the earth either on those costly designer pieces. If you take watches, for example, there are some great designs from companies such as Fossil; this is one of my personal favourites as it encompasses many different colour schemes, metals and facials. Some of the designs also come with alternate strap and face surrounds so you can change the look when you feel like it and it looks as if you have more than one model.
